Cardiology, cardiac surgery

Cardiology deals with diseases of the heart and blood vessels. The heart, the central area of cardiology, is the subject of many anatomical (chambers, atria, heart valves) and physiological (e.g. systole, heart sounds, afterload) studies. Heart abnormalities lead to heart disease and cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is at the top of the mortality statistics worldwide, and also in Hungary. Anyone who has high blood pressure, smokes, is obese, has high cholesterol, diabetes and stress is at risk of cardiovascular disease.

The Cardiology Clinic is the national centre for cardiology care in the North-Eastern Hungary region, where the most modern diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are available for patients with cardiovascular diseases.

In addition to conventional diagnostics (12-lead ECG, exercise ECG, Holter ECG, echocardiography) and medication, coronary patients are treated in a cardiac catheterisation and electrophysiology laboratory equipped with state-of-the-art equipment.

They use a unique, state-of-the-art catheter therapy and electrophysiology to treat coronary artery disease and arrhythmias. They successfully perform rotablation, i.e. the decalcification of very calcified blood vessels. By closing the left atrial valves, blood clot formation and the escape of blood clots are prevented, which can cause a stroke in an arrhythmia called atrial fibrillation. A new therapeutic treatment for hypertension, even despite multiple medications, is the ablation of the renal arterial nerve network.

Patients whose heart is too slow or weak are helped by a pacemaker implant.

In many patients with heart failure, a biventricular pacemaker is used to stimulate both chambers of the heart at the same time, coordinating the heart muscles. The ICD device is implanted in patients who need to have life-threatening arrhythmias eliminated because the device is able to eliminate them.

The coronary care unit of the cardiovascular centre provides immediate care for patients who have suffered a myocardial infarction. Since 2006, the ICU has been equipped with a transtelephonic ECG system, providing emergency ECG analysis 24 hours a day.

For patients with ischaemic heart disease, PET-CT, SPECT-CT, cardio-CT, MR and CT coronary angiography are available to assess the state of the coronary artery stenosis and myocardium.
