Colonoscopy is performed to look for lesions inside the bowel: polyps, tumours, strictures, inflammation. Colonoscopy enables the removal of the polyp, dilatation of the stricture, haemostasis, histological sampling. In colonoscopy, a 1.4 m long, 11 mm diameter colonoscope tube is inserted through the rectum and passed around the abdomen and into the colon. Moving the device forward may cause pain. Therefore, symptoms are relieved/eliminated by counter-bearing, preparation with medication (drugging, sedation, anaesthesia if desired).
