From neonatal age to 18, children are treated under the guidance of nationally and internationally recognised, experienced specialists.
The main building of the Institute of Paediatrics houses the renewed Emergency Department, the departments of internal medicine, paediatrics, infancy and pulmonology. The care of premature babies is provided by the internationally recognised PIC (Perinatal Intensive Care Centre). The main speciality of paediatric surgery is the surgical treatment of paediatric renal and urinary tract diseases, as well as neonatal surgery and the surgical treatment of developmental disorders. The paediatric surgical team performs around one thousand five hundred operations a year. Less invasive, laparoscopic operations are also routinely performed. The surgical head microscope, which was inaugurated in December 2010, enables state-of-the-art surgical procedures, especially in the surgical care of low-birth-weight newborns and infants, as well as children with tumours. Thanks to the new surgical technique, the postoperative recovery period for children is shortened.
Preoperative and postoperative care for children undergoing neurosurgery is provided in the main building, in the neonatology and paediatric neurosurgery department (see Neurosurgery).
The institute is equipped with state-of-the-art EEG, bronchoscopy, gastroenterology endoscopy and cardiology laboratories. X-rays and ultrasound scans for children are done on site. The Clinical Genetics Centre in the clinic provides genetic testing not only for children but also for adults. Organ and kidney substitution treatments, haemoperfusion and plasmapheresis interventions are routine procedures.
Outpatient services include a general infant and paediatric outpatient clinic, paediatric pulmonology, cardiology, endocrinology, diabetes, gastroenterology, nephrology, haematology, oncology, neurology, genetics, surgery and a postnatal clinic for premature babies.
Infectology and Paediatric Immunology includes the examination and treatment of infectious diseases, childhood immunological, allergological and rheumatological pathologies, and congenital metabolic diseases. Patients with both Gaucher and Fábry disease are cared for at this centre.
Children with severe immunodeficiency receive regular immunoglobulin supplementation, and young patients with storage disease receive biweekly enzyme substitution. Many of the patients in care have undergone a successful bone marrow transplant.
The Clinic is not only a leading national centre in the field of primary immunodeficiencies, but also an Eastern European centre for the diagnosis and treatment of congenital immunodeficiency conditions. Special gene mutation tests at the Molecular Genetics and Immunodiagnostics Laboratory provide genetic testing for people with this disease and their family members, even prenatally. Since 2004, the Institute has been one of the eight European Jeffrey Modell Primary Immunodeficiency Reference Centres: it is continuously performing genetic tests on blood samples from patients from Eastern European countries and organises a regular Eastern European medical training programme.
The institute offers the possibility for the mother to be with the child during the inpatient examination and treatment. Vaccination advice is also available.
